Biography
Corporal A B Steel passed through Peterborough East Station on 9 July 1916, and was serving with 3/2 Brigade Royal Field Artillery based at the RFA Headquarters at Bungay Common.
He wrote in the visitors’ book: “I spent here an hour, which I shall never forget. It is such Kindnesses as these that make a soldier’s life so much easier.”
Regrettably, it has not been possible to trace Corporal A B Steel with the service number 1216, given in the visitors’ book. However, we have found Corporal Albert Bradley Steel (Service Number 785268) serving with the RFA. He was awarded the ‘Meritous Service Medal’.
If our soldier is Albert Bradley Steel, he was born in Wortley Leeds in 1896, to parents Webster and Emma. In 1911, he was living in Ilkley with his parents.
