Biography

Trooper A J Dunkley passed through Peterborough East Station on 18 July 1916.  He was serving with the 2/1 Battalion Northamptonshire Yeomanry.

He wrote a lovely note of gratitude in the visitors’ book – “thanking the ladies for there kindness at the way they are to the soldiers at G.E.R. for being so good to them all and sitting up for them and making a place for them to rest at night I dont know where the soldiers would be with out them thanking the ladies once again.”  From this entry we can assume that the tea rooms were open 24 hours a day.

Please get in touch if you can help us to identify this soldier.
