Biography
Stanley Wortley Driver was born in Northampton in 1895, to parents Walter Wortley Driver, a house decorator, and Kate Ellen. On the 1911 Census, Walter was listed as an electrical wireman and the family lived at Palmerston Road, Northampton. He had two older brothers, Walter and Ernest.
Stanley joined the Northamptonshire Yeomanry in October 1914, and was based in the UK throughout his Army Service. In July 1916, he was stationed at Mablethorpe but by June 1917, the battalion was disbanded and Stanley transferred to the 6th Reserve Cavalry Regiment at Tidworth, Hampshire. At this time he was also medically re-classified to Category BII (able to walk 5 miles, see and hear sufficiently for ordinary purposes) because he suffered from stammering, not caused by his military service. He was discharged in March 1918.
He married Harriet Clarke in Northampton in 1932 and became a driving instructor. In 1939, Stanley and Harriet were living at 5 Adelaide Terrace, Northampton where he was listed as a motor driving instructor. He passed away in Northampton in 1971, aged 76.
