Biography

Edward Fitzgerald was born in Glasgow in 1898, to parents Thomas and Mary Ellen.  In 1901, Thomas, aged two, and his family were living at 5 Palermo Street, Glasgow, his father was a smithy labourer.  Edward had two siblings, Thomas F (7) and John A (4).

Edward enlisted in Glasgow and joined the 6th Battalion Seaforth Highlanders.  He passed through Peterborough East Station and signed the visitors’ book on the 18 July 1916 , just giving his name and number.

Edward was killed in action on 20 November 1917, the first day of the Battle of Cambrai in France.  He was just 19 years of age. He is buried and commemorated in Orival Wood Cemetery, Flesquieres.  He was awarded the British War and Allied Victory Medals.

The Battle of Cambrai, was fought in November/December 1917, and was significant in that it was the first World War One battle in which large numbers of tanks were used.  http://51hd.co.uk/history/battle_of_cambrai
