Biography

Drummer Parker, was serving with the 1/4 Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment when he passed through Peterborough East Station on 23 August 1916.  Although he signed the visitors’ book “E J Parker”, we believe that he is Jesse Edward Parker.

Jesse Edward was born in Enfield, Middlesex on 8 April 1892 to parents Arthur and Annie (nee Jones) Parker.  In 1901, Jesse (8) was living at 5 Burlington Road, Enfield, with his father Arthur (38) a gardener and siblings Margaret Susan (11), May (7) and Dorothy (6).  His mother died a couple of years earlier.  In 1911, Jesse, a railway clerk, was living at 10 Woodlands Road Enfield, with his father and brother Arthur William (21) baker’s assistant. At this time his father was listed as a nurseryman and he remarried to Sarah (nee Bacon).

Jesse’s service record has not been traced, but we know from his medal card that he served in France from 26 May 1915 and joined the Special Reserve from 22 April 1919.  He was awarded the British War and Allied Victory Medals and 1914/15 Star.

Jesse married Edith Beard in the winter of 1914 in the Edmonton District and they had one son, Edward Frederick William born in 1915.  In the 1939 Register, Jesse, a railway clerk, was living at 18 Crescent Road, New Hunstanton, Norfolk with the Daw family, whilst his wife, Edith and son, Edward were living at 18 Ridge View Cottages Birds Hill, Letchworth, Hertfordshire.

Jesse died on 15 July 1951, aged 59.  His address was 36 Birds Hill, Letchworth and probate was granted to Edith, his wife.
