Biography
Henry Edward Edis was born in Northampton on 9 January 1894 to parents Henry (boot manufacturer’s clerk) and Amy Amelia (nee Darby). In 1901, Henry was living with his parents at 50 Ethel Street, Northampton. The family were living at the same address in 1911 with the addition of sister Elsie, aged 9. Henry Edward was also working as a boot manufacturer’s clerk.
Henry followed many men from his home town and joined the Northamptonshire Regiment. Unfortunately no service record for Private Edis can be found, but when Henry signed the visitors’ book on 27 June 1916, he was serving with the Machine Gun Corps, who were based at Belton Park, Grantham. Henry was awarded the British War and Allied Victory medals.
Henry survived the war and married Mable Pittam in 1924 in Northampton; they had a daughter, Sylvia, born in 1930. In the 1939 Register the family were living at 47 Turner Street, Northampton and Henry’s occupation was a Customs and Excise clerical officer. Henry remained in Northampton, passing away at the age of 82 in 1976.
