Biography

Corporal J Jackson passed through Peterborough East Station on 15 August 1916 and signed the visitors’ book.  He was serving with the Military Mounted Police and was stationed at the 185th Infantry Brigade Headquarters, Somerleyton Camp, Lowestoft.  He remains unidentified at present, as even with his service number he has proved difficult to trace.

The Military Police’s role in WW1 covered many areas including normal police duties relating to crime amongst both troops and local civilians.  Traffic control including marching troops, collection of stragglers and loose horses, taking measures to prevent troops getting into contact with undesirable characters – prostitutes, enemy agents, provocateurs and much more. http://bit.ly/2pjhME0
