Biography
John Paterson was born in 1884 to parents John and Mary Paterson who lived at 21 John Knox Street, Maybole, Ayr.
On 9 September 1904, he married Annie McCulloch. They had three children and on enlistment the family lived at 226 High Street, Ayr. John enlisted into the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders (A&SH) in May 1916 at the age of 32. The children were Mary, born 2 June 1905, Sarah, born 18 May 1910 and John, born 1 January 1914.
John served with the 2/7 Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, the regiment were based at Taverham, Norwich when he passed through Peterborough in June 1916. John was medically discharged on 11 August 1916, at Edingthorpe Camp as a result of a bad ankle that prevented him marching and a slight hernia. He served for 89 days.
