Biography
The service records for this soldier cannot be located however, it is thought that Private N Aldred, RWF, who signed the visitors’ book in June 1916, may have been Norman Aldred.
From the information given it is known that he served with the 2/7th (Merioneth & Montgomery) Battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers. This soldier also served with the Royal Engineers and the Liverpool Regiment and was awarded the British War and Allied Victory Medals, which means that at some point during his war service, he served overseas.
If we have the correct person, Norman may have been the son of John Robert and Jane Ellen (nee Taylor) Aldred who was born in Bolton in 1891. His father was a carter and coal dealer. In 1911 the family, including siblings May (8) and Cyril (3) were living at 25 Holly Grove, Bolton and Norman’s occupation is given as casual labourer.
Norman married Hannah Hatton in Bolton in the winter of 1915, Hannah sadly died the following year.
