Biography

Thomas Stanley Hill was born in Shipley, Yorkshire in 1890, the son of Thomas, a railway signalman, and Sarah Hill.  In 1891, he lived at Leeds Road, Idle, Bradford with father Thomas (54), and mother Sarah (36) and two siblings Arthur Ellsworth (5) and Hannah (3).  In 1901, the family lived at 226 Leeds Road, Shipley, by which time Arthur (15) and Hannah (13) were both worsted spinners.  Thomas was 10 years old.

Despite being named Thomas Stanley Hill, he never used the name Thomas on any military records. Stanley enlisted on 27 June 1908, into the Royal Artillery.  In 1911, he was a Driver with the 116th Battery Royal Field Artillery and stationed at Lille Barracks, Aldershot.  He transferred to the Royal Flying Corps on 15 May 1913, as a 2nd Class Air Mechanic and served in France from 13 August 1914 to 30 August 1916.  Stanley was awarded the 1914 Star with Distinction (Clasp & Roses) and the British War and Allied Victory medals.

He was promoted to Air Mechanic on 1 May 1915, to Corporal on 20 March 1916, and Acting Flight Sergeant on 1 March 1917. Stanley passed through Peterborough East Station on 10 April 1917 and wrote in the visitors’ book “Many thanks to the young Ladies of the Soldiers rest room at Peterborough Station for a nice hot cup of cocoa and supper after a long ride.”

Flight Sergeant Hill was promoted to temporary Sergeant Major on 1 November 1917.  Stanley transferred to the Royal Air Force as a Sergeant Major on 1 April 1918.  He was awarded the Disciplinarian Certificate of Education 3rd Class 26 October 1918.  He was appointed Sergeant Major (Drill Instructor) on 1 January 1919, and transferred to RAF Reserves on 8 April 1919. He was discharged on 26 June 1920 after 12 years service.  His address on discharge was 8 Stansfield Place, Idle, Bradford.

Stanley married Mabel Eleanor Chenery in Thetford, Norfolk on 15 April 1918, and their address was 16 Castle Street, Thetford.
